Ukraine (and often uttered in Ukraine [1]; Україна Ukrainian and uttered [ukrɑjinɑ]) is the second largest country in Eastern Europe. Bordered by the Russian Federation to the east, Belarus to the north, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, Romania and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov to the south. Ukraine is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Between 1923-1991 and signed most of the country within the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Kyiv is the capital and largest city in Ukraine.
Ukraine's modern history began with the East Slavs (en). At least, and since the ninth century, Ukraine became a center of medieval East Slavic. Owned by this State, known as the Ross Kiev (en), the force and the earth, but it disintegrated in the twelfth century. After the Great Northern War, Ukraine was divided between a number of regional powers, and by the nineteenth century, underwent a major part of Ukraine to the Russian Empire, while the remainder was under the control of the Austro-Hungarian.
After a period of chaos and constant warfare and several attempts for independence (1917-1921) after the First World War and the Russian Civil War, Ukraine emerged on 30 December 1922 as one of the founders of the Soviet Union (en). Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine has the second-largest army (en) in Europe, after Russia. Live in the country's 46 million people, 77.8% of Ukrainian origin, with large minorities of Russians, Belarusians and Romanians. Ukrainian language is the only official language in Ukraine, while Russian is used widely.
